In the past few weeks, our hard-working dedicated Dorset sabs and monitors have sadly witnessed relentless ‘autumn hunting’ (aka ‘cubbing’). Tragically, North Dorset Hunt Saboteurs filmed the Cattistock Hunt killing a fox on the first day of the ‘season’. They were unable to save the fox because the kill was on private property – none other than in the grounds of Melbury House, home of ex hunt master Hon. Lady Charlotte Townshend!
The question is, will the Cattistock Hunt be prosecuted and convicted or will it be let off as on previous occasions?
For example, an attempt made by the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) to prosecute the Cattistock Hunt in 2011/2012 was met with an extraordinary letter from a CPS official stating that: any arrest “would inevitably mean that they will be represented by specialist solicitors … funded by the Countryside Alliance”; “arrests and release without charge or, worse still, a failed prosecution, could, potentially, be a media disaster for your organisation”; the Cattistock Hunt is “very media savvy”; and there was “insufficient evidence to provide a realistic prospect of conviction and therefore no action should be taken against any individual in this case.”
And in 2014, despite the RSPCA successfully prosecuting Cattistock Hunt master Will Bryer after footage of fox hunting was passed to the organization from IFAW, and despite Bryer pleading guilty at Weymouth Magistrates’ Court, mysteriously the case was later dropped.
