Crewkerne Boxing Day - Seavington Hunt
On Boxing Day, the Seavington hunt parades through Crewkerne in Somerset. The Hunt also holds its ‘meet’ in the town centre, during which time alcohol is consumed by riders and supporters, while children mingle with hounds and horses.
Who allows them to do this? How can we stop it from happening? Find out how you can help below.
A bit of background
The Seavington Hunt has a history of wildlife crimes, yet on Boxing Day, the Hunt parades through and holds its meet in Crewkerne, Somerset. It uses the town to promote its ‘tradition’ and to maintain its smokescreen of being a legitimate, popular and valued attraction for the local community.
The Hunt meet and parade takes place immediately before the historical Pram Race – an event organized by Crewkerne Lions Club to raise money for local charitable causes. After the Seavington Hunt was witnessed collecting money for the Hunt during the Pram Race in 2022, on Boxing Day 2023, Crewkerne Lions Club posted:
“Crewkerne Lions would like to publicly state we have no connection or sympathy for the Hunt. We see the Pram Race as a completely separate event. We challenge the people collecting for the Hunt which they are doing illegally as they have no street collecting licence. They are collecting to support their hobby. The Lions collect to help those in need. Please do not tar us with the same brush.” facebook.com/groups/1018713968620137/posts/1662293054262222
On Christmas Eve 2024, the Lions Club posted: “the Pram Race is a completely separate event from the hunt” which they have “no connection with” and that the Lions street collections are “to help those in need”. tinyurl.com/yju82d5h
Who gives them permission to do this?
After a successful AAF campaign carried out in 2022, Somerset Council contacted all hunts that have public Boxing Day meets in the county, informing them that they must apply for road closures as their events are not safe for the public. The Seavington Hunt was therefore forced to apply to Somerset Council for a road closure for their 2024 event. Somerset Council cannot refuse a road closure if all the correct insurance and risk assessments are in place.
What about the Town Council?
Crewkerne Town Council claims that they have no influence over the event. However, the hunts need to look legitimate, which means they need to appear to have approval from the relevant town councils – it’s a key part of their smokescreen. This point is emphasised in an article published by Somerset Live after AAF campaigners presented the case for opposing the Seavington Hunt’s parade at a Crewkerne Town Council meeting (somersetlive.co.uk/news/somerset-news/crewkerne-council-urged-ban-controversial-9747445):
“A spokesperson for the Countryside Alliance told Somerset Live: “Boxing Day Hunt meets are enjoyed by thousands of people from all walks of life, in many cases bringing much needed footfall to town and village centres, boosting support for local hospitality and retail. Often criticism of these popular events is whipped up by small groups of activists from outside the local area. It is right that local authorities support these popular events, which bring people together”.
Several councils in other areas have expressed disapproval of the Boxing Day meets in their towns – including Keswick, Wymondham, Blandford and Castle Cary – and the relevant hunts have taken their meets to private land. So, if Crewkerne Town Council turns its back on the Seavington Hunt (as morally it should), we could stop it from parading through and holding its meet in Crewkerne.
What can I do?

I am writing to you to express my objection to the Seavington Hunt’s meet and parade in Crewkerne on Boxing Day. While this hunt claims to be a trail hunting, they have a history of wildlife crimes, including a horrific fox kill in October 2024. As a local resident, I do not want the Hunt using the town to promote its ‘tradition’ and to maintain its smokescreen of being a legitimate, popular and valued attraction for the local community.
I realise that you as a council have no power to ban this Hunt from Crewkerne. I also know that Somerset Council are the organization responsible for the Hunt’s road closure on Boxing Day. However, it is within your power to ask the Seavington Hunt not to parade in Crewkerne on Boxing Day on behalf of residents like me.
I look forward to your reply.
Yours sincerely
Seavington Hunt – history of crimes.
Like most hunts, the Seavington Hunt claims to be trail hunting but has a track record of breaking the law:
- 2013: Huntsman David Parker was fined for illegal foxhunting following footage of him encouraging hounds to chase a fox near Winsham was submitted to the RSPCA by monitors from IFAW. co.uk/news/uk-england-24077013
- 2022: Huntsman Benedict Hood was convicted of illegal hunting following a police investigation. A member of the public had filmed the individual dropping a bagged fox in front of a pack of hounds. A five-strong gang of terriermen also participated in the abuse but were not convicted. org.uk/absolute-scum-seavington-huntsman-admits-hunting-bagged-fox/
- 2024: Dorset Police investigate (com/DorsetPoliceRuralCrimeTeam/) after harrowing footage circulated showing Seavington’s pack of hounds killing a fox near Beaminster on 26th October while Huntsman Duncan Cinnamond looks on (fb.watch/vvfkpSbtx9/) WARNING: The footage is very distressing to watch. The BHSA reportedly suspended the Hunt after this incident.
The Hunt has also demonstrated disregard for the safety of the public and for its own hounds:
- 2010: Three Seavington hounds were killed on the A303 after some 30 dogs strayed onto the busy dual carriageway near Tintinhull. One car was written off and witnesses and helpers described scenes of horror, chaos and carnage. A Hunt quad bike was driven the wrong way down one side of the dual carriageway in an attempt to stop more hounds from being hit by cars. co.uk/news/hunting/hunt-criticised-after-hounds-killed-by-cars/
- 2011: As many as 20 Seavington hounds strayed onto the Exeter to Waterloo railway line near Clapton. An eye witness saw a huntsman encouraging hounds to hunt in a copse adjacent to the track. The hounds spilled onto the railway line chasing a fox which had bolted. The high speed Exeter to London train passed through minutes later. co.uk/news/article-2034695/Police-probe-fox-hounds-railway-track-following-illegal-hunt.htm
