Dear Dame Angela,

We are deeply upset to learn that the consultation on strengthening the Hunting Act has been delayed yet again. We were hopeful it would take place in January, and we are now devastated to see that promise pushed back once more. Each delay prolongs suffering and uncertainty for so many people and so many animals.

Within the anti-hunting community there are campaigners, saboteurs, and monitors, alongside countless others who oppose hunting with every fibre of their being. Many of us push past exhaustion and burnout because we refuse to give in, and we refuse to stop. But for you to offer us a glimmer of hope only to take it away is deeply disheartening.

Hunts continue to pursue stags, foxes, mink, and hares illegally, bringing disruption and misery to local communities. Landowners face trespass and damage to their property, while residents live in fear for their cats, dogs, and livestock, often forced to shut gates and stay indoors when the hunt appears —if they even know the hunt is coming, which is rarely the case. Hunts frequently  block badger setts, causing another wild animal to suffer. Hunts also create serious hazards on roads, putting all of us at risk. 

Despite repeated reports, there is little police enforcement, leaving communities feeling unsafe and ignored.

None of this is new. These concerns have been raised repeatedly over years, with clear evidence. You already know about the trespass, cruelty, and danger to the public—yet meaningful action has still not been taken.

While campaigners stand in the street handing out leaflets, spreading the word and encouraging people to take action, saboteurs and monitors are out in the field witnessing the cruelty first-hand and trying to protect wild animals from terror and painful death at the hands of the hunts. Some have been doing this for twenty years. As one saboteur recently said, “I don’t have another twenty years in me.”

We cannot carry on like this. Launch the consultation, end the delays, and strengthen the law to make hunting with dogs a thing of the past. Only then will rural communities and their animals finally be able to live in peace.

• As an old poultry-keeping (for 50 years) countrywoman, I have always been against hunting with hounds. I support various saboteur groups and have learned that ‘trail hunting’ is a lie. If you choose to believe they are trail hunting, I ask you to consider how and why the trail gets laid through thick bramble thickets, across live railway lines, school playgrounds, cemeteries, people’s gardens, farms with lamb sheep, busy main roads, animal rescue centres and more.

 

• I absolutely cannot continue to police the countryside on the government’s behalf. My parents live in an incredibly remote location in Cornwall and all their nearby neighbours are also elderly. When the hunt descends on us sometimes twice a week, they bring hired thugs, drunk hunt support and they rampage across our properties, tresspass, block roads and if anyone dares say or do anything, they whip out intimidation tactics. I am a lone female that feels duty bound to be out walking to monitor them. They are blatantly fox hunting and yet the police say they simply cannot help.

• “Isn’t it time, with all we have learnt about animal sentience, their intelligence and their ability to love and feel emotions, that we act with humility and stop this barbaric act of selfishness in the part of humans. This is NOT sport, it is no different from illegal dog fighting and other equally sickening activities!

• “The Police, local countryside people, monitor groups, hunt saboteurs, celebrities and even politicians have watched hunts clearly breaking the law with impunity due to technicalities. These hunts are violent organised crime groups – attacking people, homes, vehicles and killing pets.

• These bloodthirsty hunts trying to carry on an obsolete archaic tradition belonging in the days of bear baiting and cock fighting totally detract from the real horse community.

• With the exception of university years, I have lived rurally all my life. I am also a horse owner of some 40 years and we own some land. My husband is the son of a farmer, and we have numerous farming friends. However, we are also lifelong anti hunt campaigners and have seen, first hand, the chaos and disorder which the hunt brings to the countryside. They are not a part of the cultural milieu but comprise a gang of entitled individuals who have not even the modicum of respect for those of us who live in rural communities. They cause havoc on the roads and make people fearful of walking out by engaging in a sporting activity which is unregulated and unnecessary. There has never been a valid reason for hunting wild animals with a pack of hounds and that continues to be the case.

• A government that cares about animals is a government that cares about people. There is no place in a modern society for the ancient and abhorrent act of hunting.It is cruel and unnecessary.

• All pursuit of wild animals by hunting and for sport should be banned and made illegal because the wild animals have to struggle to survive, with habitat loss through development of their environment and through to climate change. The actions of a minority of cruel people should not be allowed to impact on wildlife.

•  Any political benefit from revising the law is shrinking as groups feel the Prime Minister and in particular Emma Reynolds, DEFRA Secretary, are playing politics on an issue which needs resolution urgently – and delay will ensure bad feeling drags over the next general election, where “”Labour didn’t deliver it’s promise because they changed the law, but hunting is still happening as the Police and CPS haven’t had time to deliver.

• As a landowner of 202 acres that has asked politely, sent legal letters, involved the police, and been physically assaulted by fox hunters I can categorically state that fox hunts act as if immune from prosecution and intimidate anyone that may question their actions. Ban it.

• As an equestrian and a land owner in a very small rural village, each hunting season i hear my friends talking about the fox they got, their illegal activities. I see that hunting is not a tradition, instead an excuse for a jaunt and a way of social climbing in our community. With so many all weather arenas, British Riding Clubs, winter events, gallops and treadmills to hunt it is no longer needed to keep our horses competition fit. We no longer have small scale farmers with free range hens, but industrial sized units stocked with 1000’s hens and such biosecurity making it impossible for a fox to enter. As someone who rides out every day I must have seen 4 foxes in the last 10 years ! In fact there’s more chance of seeing one in an inner city. Hunting is a smoke screen for illegal activities, a chance to ride over land normally inaccessible and a way to insert yourself in the made up ” hierarchy ” of country and equestrian life. We do not need it nor do we want it. Times have changed massively and we must make sure the hunting ban is complete once and for all.

• At the age of 14, I wrote my first letter to parliament asking for a ban on hunting. I am now 56 and nothing has changed, despite the so called ban 20 years ago. The evidence of continued illegal hunting is clear as day, together with all the associated illegal and antisocial activities that go hand in hand. We must get this sorted once and for all.

• Even IF they were just trail hunting (they are not, this is a smokescreen for fox hunting), why should one tiny minority’s ‘hobby’ be allowed when it brings fear and misery to the majority of those living in the countryside. People who abide by the law and enjoy and seek to protect our wildlife. 

• Every time there is procrastination by the government, the hunters gain in confidence to break the law and chase and kill wildlife. More hounds will be bred for illegal activity. More children will continue to be groomed by their hunter/ farmer parents to believe that hunting is legitimate and a tradition. Animals will continue to be terrorised. 

• Having had an awful experience on a public footpath when my dog was chased into woodland by a full hunting pack it is vital that all hunting with dogs is banned. No one should ever have to stand there wondering if their dog will live while the hunt riders just treat you as a nuisance in the way of their “fun”.

• Hunting needs to be stopped it’s extremely out of time, we no longer need this happening in our areas and the people who take part are very very rude and obnoxious I have personally had words with people on our country lanes blocking drives and driving fast on single car lanes,, they are extremely unpleasant people and the cruelty, pain and suffering of animals has to stop!

•  We need robust legislation that closes the ‘trail hunting’ loophole and provides the police with the tools necessary to prosecute those who continue to flout the law.

• I am so fed up with the constant trespass of the local hunt here in North Cornwall on our beautiful unique SSSI and Ancient Monument sites. Hounds running riot chasing foxes and disturbing other wildlife, stock and the wild ponies. Huntmaster and others riding their horses and the huge amount of accompanying quad bikes trashing the supposed protected sites. Also horse and quad riders are all over the Moor and the protected sites for hours at a time getting more and more drunk as the day goes on. Shameful it truly is. Natural England, Forestry, National Trust and the local police do absolutely nothing to stop this behaviour.

• I have seen blatant fox hunting on numerous occasions. I have been ridden into and my camera stolen when I was filming them chasing a maimed fox the terrier man let out of a box. My car and caravan were both vandalised by hunt members on instruction from the huntsman. I have also seen a cat ripped to pieces in a front garden in a village, with a small girl watching and screaming. This has to end!

• I live within 200 metres of hunt kennels in the summer the stink from rotting corpses to feed hunts causes me to report them to our local environmental health team at least 3 times a year, the noise at feeding time is deafening and the dog shit and horse shit is great deal of local mess, and the traffic on our local lane is ridiculous shut them down as soon as possible.

•  None of our farming friends support hunting; they don’t allow them access to their land, and this was also true of my father-in-law when he was still actively farming. There needs to be no further delay in banning this sport. As a Labour party supporter, one of the reasons you continued to secure my vote was on the basis of your manifesto pledge to close the existing loopholes. Don’t dilly dally. Be decisive and take forward legislation which will have wide public appeal including with those of us who live in the countryside. There are huge numbers of us, but we are frequently silenced by the intimidating behaviour of hunt supporters and their vocal, but mythical, narrative that rural inhabitants support their barbarous activities. That is not the case and it never has been.

• The elite few totally ruin the countryside for the rest of us, and no I am not a Townie talking about things I don’t understand. I’m born and brought up in the countryside and on farms with a father who was a Ministry of agriculture vet. I am sick to death of feeling anxious the whole time I am out enjoying the fresh air, I am always listening for the horrendous sound of hounds, and quad bikes. They give me nightmares, having heard the screams of a fox being ripped to pieces by the hounds I’d seen chasing it moments earlier. I am sick and tired of the aggression and rudeness from people involved with the hunts, the self entitlement as they block public roads for their own use . The threats and intimidation they show towards anyone when they are challenged . The lies and the smoke screen of Trail hunting needs to be eradicated once and for all.

Action Against Foxhunting – who are we? 

Founded in 2018, Action Against Foxhunting (AAF) is a large national organisation with over one thousand members. It is dedicated to raising awareness about the extent and brutality of illegal fox hunting and achieves this through public outreach, campaigning, networking (within and outside the organisation), and research. AAF is run entirely by volunteers and any fundraising is for the cost of outreach and campaign resources such as leaflets and posters.  Members are of all ages and from all walks of life. They just have one thing in common and that is a desire to see an end to fox hunting and the smokescreen of trail hunting. People therefore join the organisation because they want to take action to this end. There are many ways that members can contribute to the cause, from public outreach to keyboard actions, and a range of activities in between.

FOXES WHERE we live are shy and aloof. There is one we’ve been watching (from afar) for a few years. She occasionally pops up on our garden wildlife camera and it’s always a joy, but sometimes she goes unseen for months. Every time I think the worst – that she’s finally been caught by the Sparkford & Blackmore Vale hunt, driven to exhaustion field after field, eyes wide with panic, leaving behind a family. It is a real source of shame to live in a hunt area and there is something particularly isolating about being surrounded by such twisted, bloodthirsty individuals. I hope their days, like this so-called tradition, are numbered.

WHEN I bred goats and took a young male to the abattoir for the freezer; what if I had released my dogs to chase the creature around on my land for half an hour before disembowelling it and mauling it to death? I’d rightly be arrested and called a monster. But this is exactly what the hunts do every time they go out for deer, or fox.

I VOTED for Labour the first time, when it announced the ban on hunting with hounds. I was always Libdem. I voted Labour again at the last election because you promised to stop the farce which allows wealthy people to ignore the laws they don’t like. With over 80% of the public supporting a definitive end to hunting with dogs, there is a clear democratic mandate for action. It is vital that this consultation addresses the legal loopholes currently exploited by ‘trail hunting’—a practice that widely serves as a smokescreen for illegal activity—to ensure the original intent of the ban is finally realised. We need robust legislation that closes the ‘trail hunting’ loophole and provides the police with the tools necessary to prosecute those who continue to flout the law.

I AM a card carrying Labour Party member and have supported and voted Labour since 1960. Labour has always opposed cruel sports and tried to ban hunting with the 2004 Hunting Act, however trail hunting has been using a loophole as a smokescreen to continue flouting the law. I AM sick to death of having to go out twice a week on my days off of work to monitor illegal hunting activity within Cornwall. It’s not only foxes being tortured and caught illegally, it’s also the trespass of the hunt on SSSI land and residence gardens, chaos on the roads along with antisocial behaviour coming from hunt members which have been left to get away with it for far too long.

I LIVE within 200 metres of hunt kennels. In the summer, the stink from rotting corpses to feed hunts causes me to report them to our local environmental health team at least three times a year.
