Which public landowners allow some kind of hunting on their land?

As you read this, keep one thing in mind: we, as citizens of the UK, are paying for these organisations and for the management and upkeep of the land they control.

The majority of people want to see hunting banned, yet public money is still being used to manage land where hunting is allowed to take place. We are also paying the salaries of the people employed by these organisations.

If we are paying for the land, its management and the people who manage it, shouldn’t we have something to say about what happens on it?

This list is a work in progress. If you know of any other piece of land managed by a public body, please let us know and we’ll add it. info@actionagainstfoxhunting.org.

Please put “HUNTING ON PUBLIC LAND” as your subject line.

Exmoor National Park Authority
Allows trail hunting on some Authority-owned land under annual licence. It has also said that some hunting takes place over Authority land by hunting rights rather than permission. (Exmoor National Park)
Dartmoor National Park Authority
Licences hunting-related activity on the small amount of land it owns, provided it complies with the Hunting Act. The Authority says the vast majority of hunting rights on Dartmoor are privately owned. (Dartmoor National Park)
Peak District National Park Authority
Has not banned trail hunting. It considers applications for trail hunting on Authority land, although there are currently no approved applications. (Peak District National Park)
North Yorkshire Council
In 2023, a proposed ban on trail hunting on council-owned land was rejected. The Council therefore should not be described as having a ban. (eDemocracy)
Ministry of Defence
This is a slightly different case: it has halted the issuing of trail-hunting licences, so I would not put it in the “allows hunting” category. It belongs in a separate “restricted/suspended” category. (Hansard)
Friends of the Quantocks
This piece of land was sold by Somerset Council to Friends of the Quantocks a few years ago. Friends of the Quantocks are a pro hunting organisation. They sold the “sporting rights” of the land to the Badgworthy Land Company, who ARE the Devon and Somerset Stag Hounds. This means the stag hunts can hunt and kill on their land whenever they like. If someone questions them about it, they say it’s nothing to do with them.
